Perinatal Mental Health 101: What to Know is a learning pathway, created by Maternal Mental Health NOW. Throughout this six-module pathway, participants learn to:
- Describe the symptoms of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders.
- Describe how perinatal mental health impacts infants, children, and families.
- Explain the historical context of racism and reproductive coercion that contribute to mental health disparities and implicit bias within the healthcare system.
- Explain how trauma contributes to and/or may cue perinatal mental health conditions, and how to address risk factors.
- Identify the 3 most commonly utilized screening tools for perinatal mood and anxiety disorders in the perinatal period.
- Name the types of loss that new and expectant parents might experience along the reproductive journey.
The pathway’s vignettes are based on real people and events, some of the information may cause emotional reactions. When participants are ready to engage with the pathway, they are encouraged to challenge themselves and be fully present with the material, as this maximizes their learning. However, participants are asked to be aware of reactions and feel welcome to move, physically or emotionally, away from the training as needed.
