Supporting Children in Foster Care: Tips for Social Workers

The UCLA Prevention Center of Excellence is excited to share a collection of resources for child welfare professionals, generously supported by Pritzker Foster Care Initiative.
While the number of new children entering the system has declined, so has the number of children exiting the system. The length of time spent in the system is growing, as both reunification rates and adoption rates continue to decline. It is essential that foster youth and resource families receive the support and tools they need to strengthen positive family attributes.
This curated collection focuses on resilience-promoting parenting skills and navigating more complex developmental stages. As stays in foster care extend, this increases the number of adolescents, and disproportionately LGBTQ+ youth, in the system. Resource parents are faced with addressing more difficult topics around changing bodies, identity, and sexual health.
This collection is intended to support providers in caring for foster youth and their resource families. It includes online trainings, videos and printable tools addressing topics like:
• Building trust in a new placement
• Trauma sensitive communication
• Strategies for overcoming bedwetting
• Healthy Sexual Development
• Resources in Español
